Planning

Idea

My group decided to perform the train scene and the leviosa scene from the first harry potter movie. We chose this because we are all familiar with the show and the characters so we could understand them and play them better than a character we didn’t know we also didn’t need to research the characters to understand them because we already knew them. We had a couple of other ideas before we settled on harry potter but most of them were more 2-person scenes and we needed something with 3 people. We discussed our ideas with Maddi and Felisha for feedback. They recommended that we chose 2 scenes rather than one so that way it is a bit longer and we could have all 3 of us talking for more of an even amount otherwise I would only be in it for less than a minute.

We chose to do our first scene in front of a green scene because that way we could just add it in because otherwise there was no other way we could add in a moving background through a window.

context

The context of our piece is that Voldemort killed Harry Potter’s parents and tried to kill Harry but failed so Harry became famous and known as ‘the boy who lived’. Harry, Ron, and Hermine have been given their letter of acceptance into Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Ron is from a poorer family and has many siblings, everything he owns is a hand-me-down or is hand-made by his mother. Hermine has 2 muggle parents and getting into Hogwarts was very shocking for her so she wants to work very hard so she can do well in school and prove that it doesn’t matter that she is a mood-blood. I used the context of my character so I knew what hermines objective would be in both the scenes and what her overall goal is. by knowing what Hermines objective are it is easier to understand what she wants and how she would act so I can act her better.

Rehearsal

I used Stanislavski’s technique of who am I so I could better understand Hermine so I could play her better and more realistically. I also used where am I so I could understand how I would act in the setting. For the train, I was more casual because I was just talking to my peers but for the leviosa scene, I was more focused on what I was doing. I used objectives so I knew what I had to work towards in our scenes by knowing what I had to work towards it helped me know what my goal was and therefore how I should act.

To prepare for our performance we rehearsed as much as possible, learned our lines and thought about what we would wear for our costumes. The first thing we did was learn our lines because once we had our lines down it was a lot easier to rehearse. Then we rehearsed so we knew exactly what we were doing. After that we had rehearsed and felt prepared we thought about what we would use for costumes. For my costume I was going to wear the formal blazer and tie as the uniform because it was easy and had a resemblance to the robes in harry potter. In the end we just wore sports uniforms as the uniform. We were prepared for the performance because we had prepared well and practiced a lot.

Performance

Next time I would sit up straighter because Hermine is proper and especially in the leviosa scene because it would have shown that she was focused and what was happening. The editing went well we managed to clip it all together in a short period of time and also add in effects such as the background noise of the train.

The best aspects of the performance were how I used my voice because I used an accent so I could portray Hermine better and make it more like the movie. I also used beats whenever the thought changed and paused to build tension in the scenes.

I learned how difficult it is to do the same scene multiple times the exact same from different shots. Because if we did something different it made it more difficult to edit and put together also for our second scene Jessie was wearing the glasses for one shoot and then wasn’t for another so when we changed angels she would go from wearing glasses to not having glasses on each was a bit strange. For me, I needed to improve what I did with my eyes because part of the time I don’t know where I was looking and it didn’t make much sense.

FUGEE – in class production year 10

Fugee was a play written about refugees and child soldiers. It is telling their story and how hard their life is. It shows how the children lose their innocence and their childhood fighting as a soldier instead of playing games and going to school. This play follows Kojo’s life and shows his journey from being a kid to a soldier then escaping and going to a children’s refuge were he then got age disputed and was deemed an adult where he had to leave and live in a hotel with 11 other men.

Overall vision and impact

Directorial vision

In our directorial vision for Fugee, we wanted to show the hardships of being a refugee, and how that can relate to others’ experiences with pain.  We chose to do the show in the upper theatre instead of the CPA because that way the audience feels closer to the cast and can feel more connected. This makes the show more personal. Some of the themes in the show are love, family, friendship, and pain. These are shown in many ways throughout the performance. The theme of love is shown through family and with Kojo and Ara. Throughout the show Ara and Kojo’s relationship grows, it starts as friendship, and over the course of the show, it builds more into love. Love is also shown in Kojo and his family. The themes of family and friendship are shown with Kojo and his family and all the kids at the refuge. All of the kids become his friends and eventually his second family. The theme of pain is also shown from the very start of the show. At the start of the show the dad gets stabbed and throughout the show dies multiple times, showing physical pain. The mental pain showed in Kojo as well as all of the other kids in the refuge because they have all experienced some sort of pain. Being a refugee is very hard and a lot of them would have lost some family as well. This show provides awareness about asylum seekers and child soldiers. The whole story of the show is based on refugees specifically child refugees. As a part of that many children, those that were refugees, where also child soldiers. The story shows all the difficulties of being a child refugee and how the government doesn’t want to deal with them, represented through Kojo getting age disputed and sent out of the child refuge. As well as this it also ventures into his life as a child soldier and how kids should never be forced to do anything like that.

Audience impact

The intended audience impact of this show was to educate the audience about refugees and child soldiers. It was to raise awareness about how hard it is living as a child soldier or a refugee because this information is still very relevant to people in Australia. As well it shows the loss of innocence because the children are forced to act like adults when they are still very young so to them it doesn’t feel like they have a childhood.

We chose to perform it in front of a contemporary audience because this information is still relevant today in countries such as the Congo, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen. These countries still have child soldiers and there are many refugees coming from different countries into Australia.

Set design

We chose to have a cardboard aesthetic to symbolize that everything in the refuge is raw and constantly changing. The cardboard can show how they are constantly moving around because when you move you pack everything in cardboard boxes. It can also show that things can be manipulated and changed (this happens in the show because we use the same prop/set piece as different things such as the ladder which is a door, tree, bench, and shelf). The cardboard can also represent poverty and rough experiences because it is easy to come by. As a part of the costume team, we chose to have white, black, and blue as the base colours, and then have red, yellow, and green as the accent colours. We did this because we wanted to use both ends of the colour spectrum, hence white and black and blue, because we wanted everyone to be wearing jeans. This is because they are very 2000s themed which is when the show is set and because even if they are refugees they would have jeans. We used accent colours to connect different characters together for example we used red to tie the people connected to Kojo together. We chose red to connect people to Kojo because red is the colour of blood. We also chose to have Kojo wear black jeans to show that he is dark and to disconnect him from everyone else and show he is different because everyone is wearing blue jeans so with him wearing a different colour it shows he doesn’t fit in. We also had people such as the social worker, manager, translator, and airport controller officer having a yellow aspect in their costume to tie them together. I think that this is quite effective because it is a visual representation of how people are connected which can help the audience see the connection. For Fugee we chose to do the show in the upper theatre instead of the CPA because that way itis darker and represents the darkness of the show, it is also small so that can show that we feel trapped in. The CPA is quite grand and to do a show like this in that setting would not work with the story. We also chose to have the actors move the set rather than having stage hands because we are all on stage all the time and because we control the world and have to do things for ourselves rather than have others do things for us. We chose to have everyone onstage for the whole show because we are all in the experience together so by not leaving it symbolized that there is no way out. Also even when we werenot a main character on stage we were still helping sell the story and we still had characters to play to show the story.

Reflection

In this show, I was the social worker, girl 1 and apart of the ensemble.  I stood up straight and authorially giving me a narcissistic appearance. I projected well because I am the one in charge so I had to be heard over everyone else and my opinion counted more than what everyone else thought. I turned away dismissively from the manager because I was not listening to the fact that she thought Kojo was younger than I thought.

I was prepared for the performance because I knew my lines and I had practiced as much as I could. I focused in class and during the rehearsals. Throughout the performance I think we did well with cutting off peoples lines we did this so it was more realistic and like an actual conversation I think we could have had a bit more movement in our scene because we didn’t move a lot.

The best aspects of our final production were it ran smoothly and the lighting and sound cues were good. Closer the start of us rehearsing it was very hard to remember what scene was next and where we all had to be but as we rehearsed it all we got better at it and got to grips of what the next scene was. All of the lighting and sound cues sounded good and worked well with the show. One thing that needed a bit of improvement was projection because some people wearnt projecting enough and it was hard to hear them. I learned many things about refugees and child soldiers. Next time I would try to add in more movement into my scene because I felt like I was just standing and not moving for most of the scene.

reflection

What were the biggest things you learnt while completing this task?  Driving tiered is a bigger issue than I thought and an interesting fact I learned is that being awake for 17 hours is the same as having a blood-alcohol level of 0.05
What one piece of advice would you pass on to young drivers above all else? Why?  Always make sure you have a good night’s sleep before driving and if you go on a road trip switch drivers often. I would give them this info because 1 it is important and 2 because younger drivers are more likely to go on a road trip and less likely to think about switching drivers so they should know this info
Write down a pledge that you will commit to when you start driving. Why did you pick these things to commit to? How will you stick to these commitments?  I will only drive when I have had a good sleep and if I am tied I will call a ride.

engineering project

In term 4 of year 9, I worked with holly and Ashleigh to build an earthquake-proof tower. We were supplied with spaghetti and blue tack to build our tower. The aim was to build a tower that could withstand an earthquake. The building had to meet the following criteria;

  • the tower had to be quick and easy to assemble
  • must have a minimum height of 60cm
  • have a maximum base of 30cm x 30cm
  • remains standing after an earthquake
  • is constructed from the materials supplied by your teacher
  • costs less than 60$ to build given that 10cm of spaghetti costs $1 and 1 gram of blue tack costs $1

Our first tower was going well and was quite stable and didn’t collapse when we tried shaking it but it didn’t meet the high limit so we added an extra piece of spaghetti to the top of it to make it reach the height but as soon as we added that extra piece it was slightly too heavy and the building collapsed. For our second tower, we changed the base of it to be a square to see if that would make it more stable and made the base as wide as we could, and yet again it didn’t quite meet the Hight limit so we added an extra piece of spaghetti on top and because it was more stable and strong it stayed up with the extra piece and when it came to the shake test to see if it was earthquake resistance it stayed standing but was very flimsy. Our third design we tried to make it more stable and less flexible so we made the base smaller so that the spaghetti that went from the corners of the base into the middle to connect would be taller because they would be on less of an angle. that helped make the building taller but it still didn’t reach the Hight limit so we added an extra piece of spaghetti to the top and it seemed strong and stable but when we did the shake test it collapsed. overall our best design was our second even though it was flimsy it didn’t collapse and with the extra piece of pasta, it did reach the Hight limit so it followed all of the requirements.

For the project, we all had jobs to keep. I was the project manager so I made sure we were all on track and to get everything done as efficiently as possible. I was also the speaker so I asked the teacher all of the questions we had. Holly was the equipment manager so she collected all of the equipment for our project. Ashleigh was the designer so she drew all of the designs and helped build, holly collected the materials and helped hold pieces while Ashleigh and I were blue tacking them together and I cut pieces of spaghetti and build the building.

I demonstrated collaboration by working in a team. my teammates were Ashleigh and holly and we worked together for the project and together we make a tower that met all the requirements for the project.

I demonstrated effective communication by explaining my ideas to my teammates. I explained how my design would look so Ashleigh could draw it and I explain why I think it would work and asked Ashleigh and holly what they thought about it.

I demonstrated problem-solving by creating new ideas when our first one didn’t work and what we could do better next time. for example for our third design, it wasn’t tall enough so I said we could create another pyramid and put it on top and add some supports to help hold it up and reach the height limit. this worked but when it came to the shake test it didn’t stay standing.

Year 9 Camp

This year was Year 9 camp in Kalbarri, and it was a great experience where I was able to work on my teamwork skills. At the camp, there were a lot of fun teams building exercises that helped to teach us how to use teamwork and put our learning into action. Some of the team-building exercises included building the tents and cooking food. All of these activities needed teamwork because you could not do them alone.

For instance, when we were building the tents, we had to use teamwork because while 2 of us helped to hold up the tent one would have to put the pole through, and without working together and using communication, we wouldn’t have been able to put it up successfully. we were not allowed to have help from the adults which made us use teamwork because there was no other way to do it.

It was the same situation with the cooking. If one person had tried to do it alone, it would have taken much longer and our group probably would have ended up eating in the dark (which would not have been very easy), but with teamwork, we were able to get the job done fast and efficiently. When it was time for my group to do the cooking, I was fast at chopping the food, and Tiana was good at using the Trangia. Doing this together, we all used teamwork and brought our own individual skills to the table. We all showed teamwork at camp in so many ways and whenever anyone needed help someone would help without question.

From this camp I have learnt to work better as a team and worked with new people. This experience has also helped build my friendships and make them stronger

Lloyd Rayney’s case

Australia’s, legal system aims to achieve justice for every person in every case, in most cases they achieve justice but there are some cases they are unable to do so. In Australia’s legal system, they use a set of principles such as innocent until proven guilty and equal treatment before the law so that we can ensure that justice is achieved. In Lloyd Rayne’s case, these were not achieved. On the other hand, the independence of courts was achieved. Concluding with the case being dismissed in 2013.

Lloyd Rayney’s wife was killed on the 7th of August 2007. Her body was found on the 15th of august buried in king’s park. Her body was buried diagonally with the dead down which accelerated the decomposing around the neck which masked the cause of death. At the crime scene, about 200m from where the body was found they found a name tag from celebrity heads, and on one side of it said the queen and on the other side, it said Lloyd Rayney.

Firstly, equal treatment before the law, states that irrespective of their gender, race, sexuality, identity, or ability have the right to have legal representation in court. This is important as it gives everyone a fair chance to be proven innocent at their trial. Equal treatment before the law was not supported in Lloyd Rayney’s case because the detective of the case said that Lloyd Rayney was the “prime and only suspect of the case”. Which was not equal treatment because what the detective said went all over the media which ruined his reputation. Lloyd Rayney was refused the right to an appeal which was not fair because everyone has the right to have an appeal, but Lloyd Rayney was not allowed to have an appeal which was not fair.  Meaning that no matter who was on the jury he would not be able to get a fair trial as this creates bias.

Secondly Innocent until proven guilty states that until there is enough evidence to prove that you are guilty then you are innocent. Innocent until proven guilty is important because if you were guilty until proven innocent then a lot of people would be put into jail because they were falsely accused as guilty. Innocent until proven guilty was not supported in Lloyd Rayney case because before Lloyd Rayney had his trial, he was considered guilty because of the detective of the case saying that he was “the prime and only suspect” as well as the fact that his marriage was falling apart, and his wife threatened to ruin his career which gave him motive. Which made people believe that he was guilty. As well as the media saying things such as “Lloyd Rayney is the prime and only suspect” which influenced people that he was guilty because everyone believes the media. Because of this Lloyd Rayney only had a judge at his trial because a judge must be nonbiased.  Once he had his case, he was proven innocent because there was not enough evidence to link him to killing his wife.

Thirdly Independence of the courts is the courts being separate from parliament, government, and the media. Independence of courts is important because it will help less people get falsely accused. This was supported in Lloyd Rayney’s case. In Lloyd Rayney’s case, he was meant to have a judge and a jury however because of the media which was influencing everyone that Lloyd Rayney was guilty which ruined his reputation, they could not get a jury that was not biased against Lloyd Rayney. To make the trial fair they only had a judge so it could be a fair trial without a biased jury.

In Australia, our legal system aims to achieve justice for every person in every case, and most of the time they achieve this but there are some where they are unable to. In Lloyd Rayney’s case, he had equal treatment before the law and innocent until proven guilty which were not supported, and independence of courts which were supported. In this case, it did not follow the principles of justice fully because equal treatment and innocent until proven guilty were not supported even though the independence of courts was supported. Our legal system aims very hard to achieve all the principles of justice for all but does not always achieve.

About me

health reflection

This unit was about learning to be respectful online. we had a booklet to fill out to show our learning and we watched videos to show us how we should act or what we should do in a certain situation.

At the beginning of the unit I used Pinterest, google, text, face time and wats app. I still use them but I am careful what I say to other people.

I learnt about empathy it is about listening to a person and to make then feel better even if you don’t say anything rather than saying at least because that doesn’t help. I also learnt to be careful about what I say online. I also learnt that a picture with colours changed or a frame after can change your perspective on the picture like in the booklet with the motorbike picture the colours were changed and that made me think about it totally differently.

What I learnt effected my online behaviour because it made me more careful about what I say and what I say and helped me know how to make someone feel better by not saying anything at all.

I do know plan to change my online behaviour in the future because I think that it is good I am being safe by not have many social media and not doing anything silly on it.

My future goal it when I get more social media to have a private account and only friend people that I actually know.
