Earthquake Resistance Building

Project Overview:

For our final assessment in Science this year, we were in groups of 2-3 and asked to design and construct a earthquake-resistant building made out of dried spaghetti and blue tack. This tower had to meet the following criteria:

  • minimum height of 60cm
  • a platform on top to hold 1 or 2 weights
  • go through a earthquake simulation test for 10seconds
  • costs less than $60 to build as 1 piece of spaghetti is $1 and 1 gram of blue tack is $1

This project is very valuable because in todays society, earthquakes cause a lot of horrible damage and deaths across the world. Doing this project shows how we need to think of ways to earthquake proof buildings in countries where earthquakes are very common to stop the destruction and devastation. These significant earthquakes can cause horrendous damage and can even leave thousands or millions of people homeless as the damage done to buildings may be unfix-able. That’s why engineers and architects today are always trying to find new ways to improve the designs and structural integrity of buildings to maximise the safety of these buildings in case earthquakes do occur, as they are unpredictable.

Our goal for this project was to build a 60cm tall building with structural integrity strong enough to be able to withstand an earthquake, using triangles as our base shape to ensure maximum support.

Engineering Process:

The first step in this process was to go through a design sprint. This involved us making random groups and having 50mins to create our very first building. We got $60 to spend on pasta and blue tack. My group used $50 on pasta and $10 on blue tack. This was a scary experience as we were in a rush to build it well, our first design of our building did survive the shake test except our building wasn’t 60cm tall. This was an opportunity to fix our design and try make it taller. Our main goal in this was to create height instead of stability.

The second part of the engineering process includes defining and research. In our research we found that the most effective ways of earthquake resistant buildings was to cross brace and use base isolation. With our supplies, cross bracing was the easiest and most cost effective option. Our building was specifically designed to be triangular because this would evenly distribute the weight and damage throughout the building. Cross bracing also distributed energy from the earthquake throughout the whole building. The brace walls had minimal shaking compared to non-cross-braced walls. This shows that the cross-braced walls boosted structural integrity a great deal when compared to a structure with non-cross braced wall. Our finished product was 60cm, was able to hold 2 weights on top of the building and didn’t fall down.

My Thoughts:

I think our group worked extremely well together and even though we all had our own roles we all collaborated and worked together. Our building withstood all earthquake simulations and even being tipped upside down. I think our building was extremely stable and secure especially after multiple tests.

DRAMA ILLUMINATE PERFORMANCE 2022

INSPIRATION

All the groups read out different stories to choose from. In the end my group and a few more groups chose to do Baba Yaga. During the making of the script, my group chose to look at different kinds of kid’s version of the story which made it easier to make a script about and perform the story.

ORGANIZATION

My group and I were organized throughout the entire process of our drama task. We had our script ready a week before it was due and when we got started on our shadow puppets, we left them in one of our lockers so they were safe, instead of leaving them in the box where they could get recked or accidentally stolen from another class.

CRITICAL THINKING

My group and I analysed different kid versions of the story Baba Yaga and tested and created our own very similar version. We worked through the sequence of the story, so it made sense to the viewers and was easy to narrate and puppet.

COMMUNICATION

During the process, my group was able to get everything done in class which meant we didn’t need to communicate about our task outside of our drama class. If we needed to communicate if a member wasn’t here, we would talk to them on teams, but if they weren’t responding it would be ok because we all knew what to do anyway.

ISSUES

My group didn’t have any problems, in the beginning, we had the script done early, so we were able to work on our paper puppets for more time. Some puppets kept falling apart which led to us either needing to remake the shadow puppet or sticky tape the parts back together.

LEADERSHIP AND RESILLIENCE

I think everyone in my group showed both good leadership skills and resilience throughout the whole process of the task.

WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY

My group had a lot of time, we also wasted some of that time when people were away because we felt it was ok because we did have enough time, but I do think we should’ve used that time better. I would also like to add music to our performance’s background.

YEAR 8 ENGLISH

-ASC CAPABILITIES WHEEL-

LEARNER AGENCY

Year 8 provides freedom and diving deeper into finding knowledge for yourself. You are needed to source information to learn for yourself, I was required to work harder to reach the goals I wanted to achieve. English allowed me to improve based on my mistakes, I looked back on my feedback, and I tried to improve my work. I saw my grade as feedback, it taught me what I needed to work on. I found that having the courage to ask questions was helpful and Mr. Gatti provided me with the assistance that I needed. Having the courage to learn from my mistakes was hard I didn’t start taking them as feedback until we got more into the year which is when I decided I needed to take them into consideration as feedback to help my future assessments, which is when I stated to improve a bit more

COLLABORATIVE SKILLS

Collaboration is a skill used throughout life. Year 8 English provided multiple opportunities for collaboration. Task 3 included the most collaboration in this program it allowed us to improve our collaborative skills by making a short film based on the short story that we created in task 2. To have a well-finished product, all group members need to be involved, the short film was my favorite task to do, it allowed students to share ideas and collaborate during the making of the script and the making of the film, and while doing this I was able to still have a lot of fun. Collaboration is putting yourself forward to help your group and sharing your ideas while listening to others. All different people have different needs some need more encouragement than others. Being a good team member is helping people express their ideas to the group. Collaboration Allows me to build my knowledge, bounce my ideas off to others, and learn from mistakes together. Collaboration takes courage, it’s easier to work on your own but if you do you won’t experience being wrong and learning from others. This year has taught me to work as a group and expand my knowledge by learning from others and group collaboration is an awesome way to do exactly this. Collaboration made me more confident to express my feeling and ideas to my peers.

$20 BOSS-Reflection

At the beginning of semester one, the year was introduced to a subject called InnovatED. In this subject we had the ability to choose an activity that would allow the cohort to become young creator and explore different thing ourselves or in groups these activities also help us learn more about the business world. I luckily got sorted into the activity of $20 Boss, where we have to make a business and sell our own products using just $20 for each perosn in your group, the maximum in a group was 4 witch meant that group would get $80.

PRODUCTS

My $20 Boss group created homemade lip scrubs and bath bombs. We had 4 different scents for both products: Lavender, jasmine, rose, and lemon. My group consisted of Anya, Jinning, and Alison. We sold our products at the Market along with many other stalls.

DESIGN THINKING PROCESS

When we got out groups we decided who would do what for the market project. We first empathised with people that can’t afford good-quality skincare products like bath bombs and lip scrubs. Then we researched and prototyped different recipes. Once we decide on a recipe we create them in bulk. It was pretty easy to make the lip scrubs but the bath bombs were harder to make because we needed to figure out how we would make them stay there shape since they kept falling apart first few tries. Then we sold as much as we could at the market.

CAPABILITIES

Collaboration – Being a part of a group and sharing the workload evenly. Working in a group improved my collaboration.

Creativity- Creating and designing a new and innovative product and business. Creating lip scrubs and bath bombs.

Organisation- Organising my group and keeping track of how much we need to achieve each innovateED lesson.

MY ROLES

  • designing packaging
  • bringing in equipment to use
  • printing + cutting the stickers
  • creating the stickers
  • helping the ceo’s
  • improving and helping with ideas

MARKET EXPERIENCE

We weren’t able to sell as much products as we would want to. I think we didn’t do great in the market due to the fact that there were not many customers and a lot of different stalls. Our set-up was very good, except we were put into a area that doesn’t attract many customers. We also only made about $20 in profit which was not ideal, but we still made some profit and were able to give some to the salvation army. We were able to give some of the left over products to ourselves and to other students.

ROLE MODELS

The 3 core values for my value house are LOVE, SELF-RESPECT, HONESTY/TRUST. In my house, we should always trust each other even if something is wrong unless we are lying about something for a good reason. In my house when we use SELF-RESPECT we have to make sure we are looking after each other and our bodies and our mental health, even like if you are getting bullied you have to try to stand up for yourself or do something about it. In my house, we use LOVE because we should always love each other so either way, if we are mad at each other or not, we need to show each other that we love each other unconditionally.

UNHEALTHY ROLE MODEL

In An Exclusive Interview, Miley Cyrus Reflects On Fame, Fashion, Family & Why She Wants To Work With Billie Eilish | British Vogue

What behaviours does this person demonstrate to show that they are unhealthy?

The former Disney star has been making headlines for her strange behavior for the past year and a half. It all started when Miley discovered ‘twerking’ and decided she needed to show the world that she could twerk, over and over again. After that, Miley continued to shock everyone with her strange behavior and crazy antics. Also she has made bad choices through VMA’S, music videos, outfit choices.

What do they look like? Do they look unhealthy, how do you know?

Nowadays, Miley Cyrus is empowering women to stay away from the things that won’t full fill you in your life. In Miley’s interview with Billboard in May 2017, she said this is crazy. I like to surround myself with people that make me want to get better, more evolved, open. And I was noticing, it’s not the people that are stoned. I want to be super clear and sharp because I know exactly where I want to be. Now, she’s living her best life, most recently performing at the 2018 Grammy’s with Elton John.

What message does this celebrity promote? Why is it unhealthy?

On screen, she’s a great actress and her movies encourage positive attitudes and great moral values. But off screen…

She Has No Respect For Rules Or Guidelines

She Makes Fun Of Other Young Celebrities

She Flaunts Her Body

She Conducts Herself In A Very Sexual Way

She Dresses Inappropriately

She Makes Insincere Apologies

Do you think young people should look up to this person as a role model? Why or why not?

Miley Cyrus shouldnt be considered a role model because the things she does, “normal” or not, she does rude, illegal, and innapropriate things for small children to look up to her.

Is everything you hear, read or see on the media true? Discuss?

Not eveything you hear on the media is true. The reason being is because a lot of the time the news doesn’t want to present the truth because the truth is not what the people want to hear. Now, if people wanted to hear the truth then it may be a different story, but people only want something new, something like drama or something funny.

Project Utopia

Reflection

-Fremantle Port-

For Project Utopia the year sevens had an assignment to come up with ideas to redesign the Fremantle Port. Project Utopia came into our English, Humanities, and Innovated. The project began in English, by reading The Giver. Throughout the book we learnt the difference between a utopian & dystopian society. In term three we learnt about livability factors. We had an excursion to Fremantle Port, where we explored all the history. To present our ideas we made vision boards, we had included, global goals, pictures, and headings. A lot of planning, communicating & perfecting went into designing the project. In the end, we presented our final model of the vision board to special guest and parents.

-Global Goals-

Global goals were a huge focus on Project Utopia. There are 17 global goals. My group used three of the global goals. Those three were, affordable energy, industry, innovation, and infrastructure. The last one was climate action. Learning about the global goals gave me a better understanding of some problems in world. Our main idea was industry, innovation & infrastructure, we decided on doing a water park & a café.

-Public Speaking-

Public speaking is nerve-racking but sometimes can be enjoyable. Throughout year 7 we have done public speaking when presenting to the class. For Project Utopia we had to do public speaking to present our speeches. I tried to improve my skills as much as I could. Using open hands is a powerful tool when it comes to public speaking. Hand gestures also help you connect with the audience, then I could get my ideas across better. Researchers around the world have found that hand gestures make people pay attention to your ideas of the speech.
ASC Capabilities Chart

-ASC Capabilities-

The ASC capabilities chart is divided into three main components, positive relationships, spirited agency, and powerful thinking. In Project Utopia I focused on effective communication. Effective communication is where there is good communication between two or more people, and is successfully received and understood by the other. As a group of four we had to learn effective communication so that our ideas could be included during discussions. For example, we effectively communicated while designing & finishing our vision board, by keeping contact & staying organized. Compromising is also another element in groupwork. Together, as a group we got past challenges and were a functional group.

-Conclusion-

Therefore, I believe Project Utopia was a valuable insight to real world problems using the Global Goals. The global goals allowed us to focus on problems in the world today and creatively solving them.  In the end of this project, I felt like I extended my thinking at the bigger picture of life. Overall, It was quite stressful to try and finish everything in just a few weeks. This project has taught me different skills, I will continue to use in school. I feel that Project Utopia was a huge and eventful success which allowed everyone to learn something from it.
