Aquaponics Reflection

Overview

Me working with the wicking beds (the blue barrels)

In term 2 I chose to do aquaponics for two periods on a Thursday afternoon. Sustainable food and aquaponics taught me life skills such as gardening and taking care of plants along with bonding and creating relationships with my peers. At the start of term 2 I was looking at the chickens and how I could increase the sustainability of the chickens at ASC. After a couple of weeks of looking at the chickens, I got the option to move to gardening and I decided to take the challenge and try something new. Me and my friend James were tasked with the challenge to get the wicking beds up and running again. During this time we were faced with many challenges that we had to fight through. These challenges include the problem of the Year 8 OLP, birds and bugs in the garden, and people being away. These challenges that came across my way were fought with problem solving, determination, and collaboration with my group.

The capability wheel

During this project, I used problem solving and organisation to get through this task. Because of the interruption of camp, me and my partner had to problem solve through this struggle and so we would water the plant a bit extra the week before so it could keep going even though we were away. Another capability that we used was organisation. Without organisation we would not have been able to achieve what we did. Using organisation we found out how to work the wicking beds, what to plant and how to keep care of it.
