Prototype 2

In our engineer project, we have built a spaghetti building that was able to stand a major Earthquake. We have three prototypes in total, prototype 0, 1 and 2. Our team starts with the research. In order to understand how to build an Earthquake resistant building, we have started our research. The result turns out that the triangle is the strongest shape of all. So our team decided to make a building out of rectangle prism. The Earthquake resistant building must be at least 60 cm in height. But the maximum height of a spaghetti is 25cm. So our group has joined three spaghetti together to form a long spaghetti as the structure of the building. But when we start to make the building, we have realised that the Blue Tack connected spaghetti is too weak to even support its own weight. Therefore, the prototype failed before even finished built. And that is the story of prototype 0. Since we still have materials (Blue Tacks and Spaghettis) left from the Prototype 0, we have gathered the spaghetti together, and wrapped them with blue tacks. Then we swapped our spare spaghettis to blue tacks with Ms Donnelly, and we used this giant piece of Blue Tacks as the base of our building to connect the spaghetti tower with the base. The building actually stands by itself. But it always tilts towards one direction just likes the Pisa Tower.

After a few days, the building has fell by itself, so we need to reconnect the building to the base. After the earthquake simulation, the building has finally fell. The simulation lasted for 10 seconds and our prototype 1 has Shaked left and right continuously and finally snapped from the bottom in the end of the simulation. Therefore, it is clear that our prototype 1 did not pass the Earthquake simulation, this was also predicted in our hypothesis, since the prototype 1 is not an actual design. Soon, our group started the prototype 2, unlike prototype 0 or 1, the prototype 2 uses an entire 25cm spaghetti as the structure of the building. This has made the prototype 2 has the ability to finally stand by itself unlike the prototype 0. Our group also had a long discussion of whether to use pentagon or the hexagon as the top surface of the building. Our group has used hexagon in the end, because it is the strongest shape other than the triangle. It is also a perfect shape to hold something on top, since the task for the prototype 2 is 25cm and it asks to hold a Lego person on top of the building. Triangles have also been used for the side of the hexagon building to create a stronger structure. During the Earthquake simulation, the building barely shake at all, at the end of the simulation, one spaghetti has fell out a bit from the structure, this was probably caused by the small amount of blue tacks. But other than that, the building successfully survived the simulation, and the Lego person on top of the building has also not fell.

Our team did not identify our different roles. We all worked together on the same task and moves on to the next one. But luckily, our working speed is still relatively fast in the class. Some repetition of the works has still happened in our group, some members, including me, has did the same work as other team members. In the investigation part, each team members have searched different type of research. Olivia has looked at different type of structures in the Earthquake resistant building. Sienna has researched about different ways to build spaghetti buildings, Zayn has searched up the strength of different shapes, and I have researched about Earthquake Resistant buildings in ancient time. Our group has also used different expertise to solve different problems. Zayn has come up with the idea of triangle shape to largely reduce our built price for prototype 0. Sienna has used her organisation to help the group to sort out spaghettis (building materials) and different research in the word document. Lastly, Olivia and I did all the calculation and the support of the structure of the Spaghetti building. Our group worked very well through out the entire engineering challenge. There are some arguments, but no one has been rude or aggressive, everyone has respected each other, and listen for different feedbacks. There are no leaders in our group, everyone has been treated the same and everyone has contributed in the team works. Zayn has used his strength, quick reaction to save the tower from falling down a lot of times. Olivia and Sienna has used organisation and collaboration to design the Earthquake Resistant building and the group word document, and I have used creativities to come up with special designs such as the prototype
