Science Engineering Project 2021

Our final assessment of 2021 was a project in which we had to build a small building that was earthquake safe, that fit into some set requirements and stayed inside of a set budget.

First Model
Final Model

Our first model was shaped like a house, it had a square base and a pyramid like roof. The additional piece of spaghetti was used on both models to help reach the height limit. Our final model was entirely shaped like a pyramid and had stabilities in the middle to additionally help with structural integrity. Again the additional piece of spaghetti was to help in reach the height limit.

Our final design process worked really well for my group and I. Some highlights were that both models fit into all the requirements and did not fall or break in anyway when they were on the shake table in a medium earthquake. If I were to change anything about either of the builds it would be to take our time and make both designs neater. This is because both models were slightly uneven. We also could have used more even pieces of spaghetti on our final model. Because of the un even pieces of spaghetti the tower was on a slant which could have been easily fixed. I also think that next time we could use a more stable strategy to connect all of the spaghetti pieces because it took a while to get all the pieces to be stable with just blu-tack. But eventually we got it perfect and it was not a problem when it was being tested.

All of the members in my group worked really well together and we all produced an even amount of work. Each member of my group bought their own specific skills to the table and incorporated them in the design and building process in our project. If I were to change anything about our group, I would make it so everyone was given a specific set of jobs to do/complete. This is so no one would be standing around and or doing nothing.

In conclusion, both models that my group and I produced were very successful but like anything they can be improved, and would have been improved if given a second chance. Our group worked fantastically together and I wouldn’t change who was in my group if we had another chance.
