Term 3 InnovatED Reflection

SUMMARY

This term in InnovatED, we started our own businesses in $20Boss, a program where you form a group with your friends and create a product or service to sell to the community and help us develop our collaborative and creative skills. When I first heard that we were doing $20Boss, I was excited due to the success my group had at the 2019 Christmas Market. For a few weeks, we were brainstorming a lot in order to see if any ideas sparked any interests. We did this by identifying our skills, passions and interests. Our first idea was a basketball rebounder that returns the ball to you after you shoot, but there were already cheaper alternatives than it would cost to make on the market and it would require too much plastic to make. We had to come up with a new idea and a member of our group said we should make keychains. It was a good idea because of the markup price so we could bring in a lot of profit. We wanted to do sporting teams but our coordinator said that we might not be able to due to copyright issues. Because of our passion for sport, we agreed that we wanted to stay related to sport so we decided to just laser-cut different sporting balls and put them on a keychain so you can represent your sport. If I was to do this program again I would try to keep my group more focused and productive.

DESIGN AND CAPABILITIES

My favourite part of the Design Thinking Process is prototyping because I like being hands-on and making stuff and seeing the results of what we make. We only made one prototype because it was successful the first time. I find it hard to ideate and identify problems that people have because most everyday problems are solved by now. We had to be creative and collaborative for this project because if we disagree with something our group says we have to calmly get our point of view across. We could improve our self-awareness because we weren’t seeing the needs or wants that people would require as well as we could have.
