STEM in Sport Reflection

This term in Innovat{ED}, we learned about how STEM can be incorporated into sport. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Our group, consisting of Noah, Luke and myself elected to experiment by changing our kicking fundamentals and how that will affect the distance of the kicks. We started by brainstorming how we are going to make sure we incorporate STEM into our kicking so we decided that is was best to first record a base measurement. For the next week, we researched and noted the techniques of AFL players with excellent kicking technique such as Patrick Dangerfield and Shannon Hurn. One week later, we incorporated our new techniques and started measuring our furthest drop punt kicks with the added features. Thanks to some excellent camera-work from Luke, we filmed the kicks in slow-motion to show that we were mimicking the technique as accurately as possible. We have all our data recorded and we are currently working on a presentation for the year 8 final day where we will present our findings with parents and friends.
