RAAFA Tech Fair

Our project in InnovatED this semester was to hold a tech fair at RAAFA. We did this to help connect the residents to new day technology and show them how everything has changed. We had lots of different stands focusing on a different type of technology including things like school technology, drones and virtual reality. We also decided that we would need some tour guides to stay with a group of the residents and show them around and interact with them. I was apart of the social media stand where I taught the residents about how teenagers all around the world connect now.

The planning process took up most of our time as there was so much for us to cover. We started by using empathy to think of things the residents would be interested in learning about and what they might already know. After we had some ideas we had to pitch them to Bruce, the wellbeing co-ordinater at RAAFA who helped us plan the event. Together we decided what the stand were going to be and how the event was basically going to run.

For the actual tech fair I showed the residents three social media apps and how they were used. Originally there were three member of the social media group who were each going to show one app but we decided that it would be too confusing to have us always swapping out so I became the head of our stand. It was now my job to teach the residents about all three apps myself. I though it would be interesting for them to see how things have changed and learn how teenagers like the grandchildren communicate with each other and entertain themselves. I tried to make my presentation interacted by letting them use filters on Snapchat. I faced some challenges with some of the elder residents who had trouble with hearing but I overcome that as I just moved them to the front and spoke a bit louder.

Some of the college capabilities I used were leadership, organisation and problem solving. I used leadership when I took charge of the group and took on the roles of my other group members. I used organisation as I had to prepare a script for the day and all the accounts I was going to be showing. If I wasn’t organised it would have been very had to run my stand as I needed to use 3 different apps so I had to create accounts on all of them and plan what I was going to say. I also used problem solving as I was more difficult to present to elder residents that it was to my classmates.
