Teamwork At Year 9 Camp Kalbarri

In 2020 the year 9 cohort took an 8-hour bus trip up to Kalbarri for a six-day adventure camp. Camp Kalbarri promised many fun memories and encouraged leadership and teamwork. Two specific examples of teamwork stuck out to me and that is what I am going to talk about.

The first example of teamwork that stuck out the me was the cooking groups. At breakfast and dinner, we split into our three to four-person cooking groups. You were encouraged to work as a team to, collect the ingredients, cook the food, eat it, and then clean up. We did not split into our cooking groups at lunch, instead of making communal meals such as everyone getting a wrap and having a portion of salsa. Many people while cooking was not really their strong suit were able to allocate the cooking roles to other group members and instead could play parts like vegetable cutter and ingredient collector. Cleaning up was the hardest part because no matter how hard everybody tried as a group everything just ended up wet, dirty, greasy, and sandy.

Another example of teamwork that I noticed was when we were given free time and my friends and I went exploring in the gorge. We would help each other to climb up the gorge and find paths to get to the top of the gorge and see the magnificent view. If one of us slipped the others would help them to their feet. If one person accidentally took a wrong path and ended up a bit separated from the group, we would yell out so the slightly lost person could locate the other people and get on with climbing. Climbing around and exploring the gorges was really fun and provided a sense of accomplishment which motivated us to work as a group to find new places and climb higher than ever before.

Using teamwork to accomplish our goals brought us closer together as people and made everything easier. Camp made me realize that it is easier to work as a group and to not be afraid to rely on people to accomplish the task at hand. In the future because of my experiences at camp, I will be more inclined towards working as a group and sharing the burden of work as opposed to working alone and bearing the stress of all the work and struggling when I could be cruising in a group.
