Chicken Project

All Saints’ recently bought a few chickens for the students to care for. These chickens needed some volunteers to look after them.

In Term 2, a group of students have been working on caring for the school’s chickens. My group included Aidan, Anna, Eva and Zoey. My group have been working on creating chicken rosters to monitor their care. This is very important as the chicken’s may not be cared for correctly and may create serious trouble for the chickens.

As a group, we created 3 different rosters (daily, weekly and monthly) and a presentation ready for the showcase in Week 9. Our different rosters consist of different jobs that needed to be done whether it was regularly (daily), not as urgent – regularly (weekly) or can wait and harder jobs (monthly).

In the showcase, we were able to engage with our audience well and get many people to join in. Overall, I enjoyed researching the many aspects of the chickens as it helped our knowledge. It would’ve been even better if we had decorated our area in order for people to remember our group and also notice us. It would also have been better if we could research a bit quicker in the first weeks as we had to rush quite a bit to be able to have something to showcase.

Progress

When we were tasked with our roles, we were able to start and use the ASC design thinking process to get started. The Design Thinking process is created to help us, students, to use our innovations and help us work towards our projects.

.

We began researching about the chickens and connected the information with our own knowledge. We researched different ideas to keep it sustainable while helping the chickens live a better lifestyle.

We needed to find a way to track the care of the chickens. We chose to use a roster as it would be easy and clear to track if and when the job is done.

We were then able to start ideating on what chickens need and the roles to take care of them and support them. This information was transferred into the different categories so our rosters could be created.

I was assigned to create the monthly roster. I had to ensure that I did extra research in order to make sure I included all the jobs that needed to be done. If I had not included all the jobs needed, people who worked in the chicken coop may not know much about the different jobs.

Core Capabilities

During this project, it has enhanced many capabilities, some include collaboration and leadership. This project built on my collaboration skills as we had many challenges that we faced and we would not be able to find a way to complete the challenge individually. We also needed to figure out different roles for each other to be able to showcase our complete ideas and creations. I had also helped my leadership skills, as we had to take initiative to make sure everything is done and also during the showcase we had to make sure that we were all focusing so that we could let our guests know all the information that we had learnt.
