Reflection of WCE AFLW

I was not present for one of the WCE AFLW presentations, but I was present for the diet presentation. In that presentation, the dietician for the AFLW explained to us when we should eat before and after games/training and what types of food we should be eating and how much of them. She took us through an activity to get us to write down what we generally eat during the day to see if we meet the recommended daily dietary needs.

How do I perceive skill training and/or personal physicality?

I have always perceived and picked up new skills easily and with basketball, I have done it easier. Working with Mister Haxby I have been able to pick up many different things during this semester. I have realized more now after speaking with Mister Haxby that I need to use my strength and body when driving and initiate the contact when attacking the rim and going for a layup, at the start of doing this I was getting to the rim easily as I am strong and athletic but I was getting jumped on by people and wasn’t getting any foul calls so I now have to yell when I get inside and I have been getting foul calls now, also I know when to utilize the hop stop and euro step to get into space instead of driving into people.

Offense concepts

During this semester on offensive concepts, Mister Haxby has spent a great deal of time talking about space and off-ball movement such as cutting. Looking for space and cutting is useful as it opens up the rest of the court for the other players and gives them room to operate and score. Cutting and going to space also allow new scoring options such as a pass to the space for a shot or layup and a pass to a cutter for a shot or a layup.

Defensive concepts

Defensive concepts that were covered this semester were help defense and help defense positions also the concept that if you are unable to stay in front of your defender and contain them, we learned when to run to get back in front of the offensive player to contain or contest their shot. The shell drill was used and ran many times in order to lock in the understanding of help defense positions and when to move to help or get into a different position.

Where to from here?

From here I will continue working on my basketball skills, basketball IQ, physical attributes, and off the court well-being/lifestyle choices. I will continue playing at Willetton Tigers unless an opportunity at another club. I will do some research to find the best exercise, drills, and lifestyle factors in order to be in the best mindset and health in order to maximize my abilities. I will better learn how to use my strengths on the court.
