Maths project on Food Sustainability

This project was on the general theme of sustainability. Eric, Misaaq and I choose food as it is something we didn’t know a lot about in terms of sustainability and were curious about. We choose to do a PowerPoint presentation exploring what might be the best food for the future. Although it was brief we got a good idea of the types of food that are more sustainable than others. Parts of the PowerPoint are shown below.

One of the things I found interesting where that crop produced food actually produces more protein while using less land. This surprised me as when you think protein you think eggs, meat or other dairy or meat products. While this may be because crops are just that more efficient in terms of land use it is still surprising.

In terms of communicating via mathematics, I found it interesting how different graphs could almost “triangulate” a good food. This made it interesting to describe and show that although one graph may say a particular thing is good in a different context it could be completely different.

Another interesting thing was finding some key facts/areas of food sustainability that I hadn’t thought about before such as land use.
