$20 Boss Reflection – Year 8

The $20 boss program was a fun and intuitive way to maximise business development and growth ideas. This program really got me and my group to think when we came across a problem, and had to problem solve. I like how $20 boss almost exactly replicated the outside business world and the challenges subsiding within, as well as the teamwork that was necessary to achieve such a feat. During the duration of the project, we had many steps and levels to get were we are right now.

THE PROCESS

  • The first step in the whole process was to figure out the CEOs and what products were going ahead. We were given time to go home and prepare a pitch for our idea. When we pitched, we pitched in smaller groups than the big group. We all took turns to pitch out ideas and everyone had a successful pitch. The next week, the people that got selected were announced and then the fun started.
  • The second step in the process was employing people to work for them as the groups needed a certain amount of people in their group for the product to be made. So, all the employee or people looking for a job, wrote quick 5 minute resumes to show to CEO and tell them about themselves. I went to 3 different CEO’s and applied for them as I spoke about my strengths and weaknesses as well as what I like doing.
  • The third phase was the electing phase. All the employees went and gathered outside as the CEO’s were choosing who they wanted in their company. They all voted and I came out that I was in Dylan and Finlay’s group and we were making hacky sacks. I was happy to be in the group because my friends were in the group but also because I liked the role that they gave me in their company, the accountant, as I love dealing with numbers and working in excel.
  • We then prepared and started making our prototype to show to the teachers so that they could give us the thumbs up to collect the money from the accounting department so that we could start buying and making our hacky sacks for the market in a few weeks time.
  • The next part is a mix of a lot of different parts because as the members, including me, kind of fluctuated in roles and did different things. During the few weeks, we managed to make around 25 hacky sacks and we had many posters and flyers about what we were making. We were ready for the market.
  • The market finally rolled around and we felt like we were prepared. We had everything set up and everything was looking perfect, but we were missing something… The customers! A few minutes after we had finished setting up, the first customers started to show. We all got our smiling faces on and made sure we promoted our business very well. We did not get many sales at the beginning but when more people started to show up, we started getting more sales. But, whatever happened, we made sure that we had smiles on our face and an open and kind behaviour so that we could attract as many customers as possible. At the end of the market, we realised so that we had sold out and we were extremely happy.

ASC CAPABILITES CHART

In the process of the $20 Boss Program, I learnt and developed a lot of the skills and capabilities. Some of the capabilities that I developed included creativeness, problem solving and resilience. I used these three capabilities because I was able to find a way to tie up the top of the hacky sack to make sure that it was neat but also effective at keeping the rice out.

TEAMWORK

Throughout this project, I feel like me and my team worked very well together and made very good progress overall. Since the beginning, we all elected roles and jobs for every team member and what we had to do in order to achieve what we achieved. We all pitched in with our strengths and talents to make the project work.

Me – I brought most of the product making and the financial sides of our company and made all the spreadsheets and sales sheets for the group as well as all the hacky sacks.

Dylan – Dylan was our supplier and went to the shops to buy whatever we needed for the project as well as the manager who kept everything tidy and on track.

Fin – Fin did all of the stand work which included the main base, the wooden frame to rest the hacky sacks on when at the market. Fin also helped a little bit for marketing as he made the company’s logo.

Orlando – Orlando mainly did the advertising, making poster and flyers as well as flashy price sheets to go onto the table on the day of the market.
