Specialised Basketball Reflection (Year 9 Sem 1)

SKILLS

Identify and discuss an important skill that you have developed in this unit and how you have implemented this into your basketball games. A minimum of one paragraph is expected in your reflection.

During this unit of Specialised Basketball, I have learnt one critical skill in my game that has helped me on the court during games and practice. That one skill is my shooting element in basketball. Although I was a reasonably good shooter before, I have been able to improve my shooting form and accuracy of my shot. The course has taught me the fundamentals of shooting a basketball properly. I follow the BEEF method. B for balance is to do with my shoulders and feet being balanced and in line. E for the elbow. This showed me the right way to position my elbow when preparing for a shot. E for eyes means to always look at the basket, and F is for follow-through. This is to have a good release of the ball and ensure that none of your fingers gets in the way of the ball’s trajectory.

This has helped me with my shooting by allowing me to use this perfected form in games to get some points and help my team win. Learning about the quick release of the basketball also helped me, as it allowed me to shoot contested shots in the game and in training without being blocked by the defenders.

COURSE

Across the semester you have attended multiple courses, including expert advice from specialists in their field. Identify a course that you found useful and relevant, include the major concepts raised and discuss how it will impact you in the future. A minimum of one paragraph is expected in your reflection.

The most helpful course I attended this semester was the recovery course, as it educated me in many ways about how the body heals after it has been used. This course was also beneficial to me because it was very relevant. After a basketball game or basketball training, my body is very sore due to the immense levels of fitness I am pushing it to do. The course talked about the different levels of recovery and how important each one is. First, there is sleep and downtime as it allows the body to fix itself mentally and physically. Secondly is nutrition and hydration. This is important as your body needs nutrients and water to replenish itself after they have been used through exercise. Next is water immersion such as hot or cold water showers which help to pump through your veins. This is called vasoconstriction and vasodilation. And lastly, there are relief exercises such as stretching, massage, therapies and cryo chambers.

This helped me because I am slowly following them, such as getting good sleep using the R90 method, eating healthy and stretching. Therefore, this has allowed my body to replenish and prepare for other places I might need to use my energy. In the future, I will continue to use these recovery procedures to help my body recover from physical work and activity.
