Lock Dwellingup Day Trip

This semester in Lock we went on a day trip to Dwellingup which was a really good opportunity to use and reflect on different capabilities whilst doing different activities. The activities consisted of Kayaking, Bush cooking and treetops course, we had been practising kayaking and bush cooking leading up to this day. I found I used the capabilities resilience, collaboration and effective communication the most in these activities.

Kayaking- resilience

Our first activity of the day was kayaking. Our original plans got changed and we ended up kayaking somewhere different to where we were supposed to. Whilst kayaking I used the capability resilience and I stepped out of my comfort zone. I found myself really uncomfortable when kayaking because its something I’m unfamiliar with and not super confident at and we also had to be pushed down stairs to get in, but I overcame this by stepping out of my comfort zone and I had to be resilient. I was really nervous before getting in the water while kayaking but after we were finished kayaking I realised it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Bush cooking- collaboration

Our second activity of the day was bush cooking and we had to make a lunch for our group. I was in a group of three with Jaide and Phoebe. Together we decided we were going to make and take the ingredients for vegetarian nachos as our lunch. Jaide and I did most of the cutting of the vegetables and Phoebe cooked it on the fire. We heated up nacho sauce and beans and then added corn chips, cheese and then the vegetables. Our nachos tasted really good and we all enjoyed them. We had to make sure we used the capability collaboration so we could work together to figure out who is bringing what items to make our nachos and who was doing what to cook them so we can work as an effective team while preparing our lunch.

Treetop adventures– effective communication

The last activity of the day we did was the treetops adventure. The treetop adventures had all different levels of difficulty to choose from and you had to attach yourself to the ropes using your clips. This activity was my favourite and a lot of fun and I wish I had more time there, but also required lots of attention. I used the capability effective communication the most as when my clips got stuck I had to make sure to let one of the workers know which did happen a few times.

Leave no trace

Leave no trace is an extremely important concept to try keep our environment safe and preserve the beautiful environment we experience now for future generations, and leaving the places we go to in the same or better condition then when we got there. We practised leave no trace as much as possible whilst in Dwellingup. After we did our bush cooking we picked up all the rubbish where we were cooking. We also went around the campsite and picked up other rubbish that shouldn’t be there. Overall this day trip was a really good learning experience to practise and reflect on different capabilities and work on leave no trace.
