SNORKELLING – organisation

In term 4 of Muir we participated in snorkelling, Overall we did a couple sessions at the aquatic centre to prepare for a session at the Coogee Omeo wreck trail in preparation for our Rottnest camp. This semester of muir was my second time doing this course as I did it last year in 2021 so it was mainly a refresher for my snorkelling skills, but this time around I felt a lot more confident with my skills. Our session at Coogee was somewhat challenging as the weather conditions were very cold and overcast making the water very choppy and hard to snorkel in, but this helped in preparing my skills for Rottnest in case the conditions were the same there. I worked on the capability organisation the most in this snorkelling unit, organisation is a big thing for our snorkelling sessions to ensure that you have everything you need and I believe I was able to practise and work on my organisation skills during muir this year.

ORIENTEERING – leadership

In term 3 of Muir we did orienteering. I was away for most all of the orienteering sessions so I didn’t participate in any of the manning park orienteering sessions. I did do some orienteering around the school which I used the capability leadership the most in. As a group in orienteering I think I was able to practise group leadership.

ARCHERY – effective communication

In archery I used the capability effective communication the most. Effective communication was extremely important in archery to ensure ensure everyone’s safety. Everyone had to make sure they were listening our for the whistles which signal when we can move before and behind the line and when we can shoot.

ROTTNEST CAMP

The Rottnest camp for muir was an overnight camp. I really enjoyed this years muir camp as I also attended the day trip last year for muir and this year we got to do lots more stuff because it was an overnight camp rather than a day trip. We snorkelled at two different locations which were little parakeet bay and the basin. I really enjoyed snorkelling at both these places and felt confident with my snorkelling skills, but I did struggle with being very cold.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Leave no trace is an extremely important concept to try keep our environment safe and preserve the beautiful environment we experience now for future generations. Some ways we practised leave no trace whilst in Rottnest is we did an Emu bob before we left each place we were at. The Emu bob is were we all stand in a line and walk at the same time picking up and rubbish that is in front of you making sure we cover all the ground. Leave no trace ensures we leave the place in better condition than we found it in. The principles of leave no trace are; plan ahead and prepare, travel and camp on durable surfaces, dispose of waste properly, leave what you find, minimize campfire impacts, respect wildlife and be considerate of others. I think in muir we practised plan ahead and prepare, dispose of waste properly and respect wildlife and be considerate of others the most. We used these as we prepared lots for going to Coogee and Rottnest for snorkelling, whilst at Rottnest we always disposed of our rubbish correctly and we made sure to be respectful to wildlife such as quokkas and keep our noise down for the other people around us such as the other campers at the camp site.
