Art is a subject that includes many techniques and variations, however in semester 2 if year 10 we looked at drawing (still life’s) and painting (Apples).

Drawing: is technique in which images are depicted on a surface by making lines. However, being an artist requires much more than simply drawing a line, you need skills such as patience, creativity, problem solving, delicacy and to be resilient, just to name a few.

Within the drawing section of this unit, we began by doing various worksheets, practicing our tone, shading stippling and other techniques that we may need in our final drawing. But, after the worksheets were complete, we needed to take a photo of our Dutch still life, then the real work began. Next up we started to use the pastel pencils. Essentially here we were just getting used to the feel of the pencils, how to blend them and how to get some good colours before moving on the the final artwork.

Learning curve:

Going into this semesters work, I already had a good understanding of what drawing was, I already knew hot to blend, shade and stipple work, but over the first term, I still learned a great deal namely from my final artwork. As a part of my final drawing I overcame a great number of difficulties and ways to improve my art. During the final drawing I found myself overworking a large part of the artwork, here I was trying to overbend areas, but as I worked the drawing further and further it just got worse. So, a valuable lesion I learnt was to not overwork art, there is a point where you should stop. Other problems/difficulties include getting wax (or some waxy substance) on my page. (making it impossible for the pastel to go down and achieve the colour I wanted.) This was an issue that remained unresolved which unfortunately made the drawing worse then it could have been.

My final drawing:

overall I am happy with my final drawing and have certainly learnt from it. Particularly from the overworking of the drawing which I tend to do with a lot of my art.

Painting

Painting: is the practice of applying paint, pigment, colour or other medium (commonly the base of a paintbrush)to a solid surface.

As a part of this section of the unit we followed a simmilar pattern to the drawing, (worksheets/practice, photo of our fruit followed by the final artwork). As a part of the ‘worksheet section’ we made a colour-wheel blending all of the primary colours (blue, red and yellow=green, orange, purple and various hues in-between) followed by a colour chart (us trying to blend said colours to fit our apples)

As a part of the painting unit, i came across the same problem as I did with the drawing, overworking it.

Summary

From this I learned that art is nowhere as easy as it seams and that to create a good artwork you not only need to be; patient, resilient and creative you need to learn when to stop and not overwork it which will hopefully help me in any of my future drawings or paintings.
