Progress Update 2

This term we began working on our final presentation for our year 10 Hass project, we started by grouping our already founded information and putting it in the categories it goes under, we also expanded this information using the websites we already had. For example, we expanded on each of the schools we found and found the key information that we needed to know like where it is and how much it costs.  We used the school’s website to find out information on K-12 schools and put this into our PowerPoint. We didn’t just want the school names and where they are located, we needed information about the gender of students, the ages of students and the number of students. We need this information because when adults are making a decision about what school to send their children to they look at lots of factors, not just location and price. We started to put all our info into the PowerPoint and linked all the slides so they flowed together.

We are using PowerPoint to present our project as it has a feature that makes it possible to link slides using hyperlinks. Eliza mainly used PowerPoint as she already had the skills and was confident that she could make our project work using this feature. We had some difficulties getting started linking the slides but now everything is working perfectly and we are well on our way to having this feature working for all our slides. My role was to gather all the information together and put it onto the PowerPoint. This week I worked on the information for schools. I wrote stats on the best K-12 schools in Perth and put this on the PowerPoint with a picture of the school.

After our first progress update, we had lots of good feedback that we needed to take into consideration when continuing our project. One main point of feedback from the first update was to clearly outline the main factors that make up a livable city. We did this by writing information on each factor. On the night of the presentation, we will have this information displayed on our table so people can see and understand the factors before moving onto the PowerPoint.

We wanted to add more of a visual element to our project as it is mainly on our computer. We will make this possible by printing a map out on foam board and then using pins to locate the “best” and “worst” suburbs based on all of our factors. We will have statistics linked to those suburbs so people can see why they are the best and worst suburbs

To move we need to finish the PowerPoint. To do this we need to finish the research on all the factors then put it onto the PowerPoint. This will take a lot of work but I’m confident we can finish before the presentation. We also need to link up all the slides so everything works together and people can use the PowerPoint in an interactive way on the night. We also need to print out our information on the factors and do the map so this can be a visual element shown on the night

Hass Project Progress Update 1

As a part of our year 10 humanities course we are able to research a project of our own choice and to create an outcome to showcase at a final exhibition in term 4. The topic that I have chosen to research is geography with my partner Eliza. We are researching the liveability of Perth. To start we first thought I what we wanted to do for our project, we had a couple of ideas but eventually decided on one idea we both really liked. This idea was something interactive that shows the best places to live in Perth. Once we got our idea started filling out the booklet. We wrote out questions we wanted to answer and what capabilities we would use throughout this process. We then worked on and finished our annotated bibliography.

The capabilities we will use are

  • Effective communication as we will need to talk to each other to decided what we are doing and if we are heading in the right direction. We cant just communicate but we need to do it effectively. This means sharing ideas, sharing what we have done and discussing what we still need to do.
  • Problem solving as we will come across challenges and have disagreements and will need to over come them.
  • Organization. We need to be organized with what we are doing so we stay on track and don’t fall behind. We need to plan out what we are doing so we are organized and stick to a plan.
  • Creativity. We have already used this by coming up with our idea. we will need this further next term when we decide how we will present our information.

Moving forward we need to

  • Research more into what people like to do in Perth
  • Research public transport in Perth
  • Research why people like living in Perth
  • Write more research questions along the way as we find out more
  • Research what makes Perth a liveable place

After we have finished all the research we need we will start brainstorming how we will present our findings. We will need to use all our capabilities when we begin and continue to do this. We will work on our project for all the time we have in term 4. We will especially need to be creative during this process because we want to come up with a fun and creative idea we can work on and stick with.

Hot House Instagram Takeover

Earlier this year, during the rehearsing of the school production “MAMMA MIA”, I was given the opportunity to take over the Hot House Instagram for a day to promote the production. This opportunity arose as I am a part of the Arts Council, and someone was needed to promote the production in broader ways. I thought this opportunity was a unique one and I was happy to put my skills into something useful. As part of the takeover, I went to school during the holidays to one of the MAMMA MIA rehearsals and gained access to the Hot House Instagram. I worked alongside Miss Osmetti, and she guided me throughout the day. I created stories, showed behind the scenes videos, took photos of the cast rehearsing and at the end of the day posted on the Instagram account showing exciting pictures I had taken during the day and outlining the efforts the cast and crew had put in during the past few months.

Throughout the day I had to use a lot of creativity to make the stories engaging. I took photos from different angles and in different lighting. I took both photos and videos and used different texts and stickers on the posts to engage the audience in different ways. My work was received with great enthusiasm from multiple members of staff and Mr Mayhill’s described my work as professional and informed me that it was the most impactful work that was produced during the production of MAMMA MIA. I believe I showed great leadership through this experience as I not only stepped up to the opportunity, but I took initiative throughout the day. I worked with new people and teachers and made sure I asked for help when I needed it. This opportunity not only expanded my skills but opened new doors for me as I can now produce more content for Instagram and show others how to work these tools to create exciting and engaging content.
