Global Goals

This semester for one of my electives I chose Global Goals. This elective is focused on the 17 sustainable development goals or the SDG which was founded by the UN or the United Nations and aims to helps to better our community and the world a better and sustainable place. The United Nations was formed in 1945 and is made up of countries around the world that have joined hands to fix and handle the worlds issues, they created a list of the 17 most important issues and promised to tackle each one by 2050. For the first term of this semester, our job was to decide which one of the global goals we would want to focus on. Our group decided to focus on Goal 14, This goal is called life underwater, and it focuses on saving the underwater ecosystem from stuff that could harm it such as pollution. Our group decided to focus on the reducing the amount of pollution from our near by oceans. This goal overall has made little progress with the worlds oceans still being heavily polluted. This relates heavily to Australia since we are surrounded by water and amazing beaches which has started to lose its beauty because of the amount of plastic is harming the marine ecosystem.

When we finished deciding on a goal we had to choose what we wanted to do for it. After some thinking and brainstorming of various ideas we decided that we wanted to help a local beach cleanup or host our own in a near by beach in Perth. This idea changed through the weeks with the idea of wanting to host our own slowly turning into assisting an already established one.

After contacting a few organizations for advice an when microplastix reached out. We set up a meeting where they informed us on microplastic a very common form of pollution that is especially harmful because of its small size, along with a device that clean them up which All Saints already had in their possession called a trommel. A trommel is basically a giant sieve for sorting microplastics out of the sand which is very useful. When the meeting was over we also decided to reach out to another beach clean up organization through Instagram messages called saltwater cleanup. Even without talking face to face or through video call we learnt a lot from them and informed us of another amazing organization called Tangaroa blue which hosted multiple beach clean ups along with selling their own clean up kit along with letting you log your progress which was a huge step forward.

Over this long process we encountered a lot of challenges in relation to COVID leading to all our group members missing very large portions of classes which led us to not be able to host our own cleanup. Even with these challenges and not being able to host a clean up, with all our hard work and planning we were able to give the opportunity to a future group and continue our project, with the purchased beach clean up kit and pre planned posters and ads. Even so our group could have been more efficient if we had managed our time well we could have been able to go to a beach and clean it up, plus the missed periods of time because of COVID our project was greatly interrupted.

We are going to pass this project to the next group of people who also have the same passion for helping the community along with help clean up and today our local beaches. With all the preparations that they will need already set out and ready. During this project we would not have been here without the assistance of Mrs Rees, the teacher for this class and the head of microplastix Charlie Guilloteau, along with the amazing advice from saltwater clean ups along with Tangaroa blues resources.
