Sustainability in my Household

Water Efficiency: The effective use of water to reduce the amount needed for certain activities.

Examples of water sustainability in my household:

  • Using a water efficient washing machine and dishwasher, only with a full load
  • Only using sprinklers in the early morning and late night to reduce evaporation rate

Ways to improve our water sustainability:

  • Have shorter showers (maximum 4 minutes)
  • Install rain water tanks to collect water for the grass and plants
  • Install a water saving shower head
  • Reduce lawn area to minimise water needed for the grass

Energy Efficiency: Using less amount of energy to perform the same tasks.

Examples of energy efficiency in my household:

  • Installed solar panels to reduce use of energy from fossil fuels
  • Have a hybrid car
  • Energy efficient air-conditioners

Ways to be more energy efficient in my household:

  • Only use the air-conditioner/heater when more than one person is in the room (don’t have all the airconditioners on in the house when no one is in the rooms)
  • Make sure to turn off all the lights when out of the house, and use natural light during the day

Waste Efficiency: Minimising the amount of waste generated.

Examples of waste efficiency in my household:

  • Collecting soft plastics and delivering them to the Coles or Woolworths collection
  • General waste and a recycling bin for the weekly collection
  • Uses reuseable containers and coffee cups

Ways to be more waste efficient in my household:

  • Avoid individually wrapped snacks and food to minimise plastic
  • Use more reusable masks instead of disposable ones

Food Production: Producing the maximum amount of food from the minimum amount of raw materials.

Examples of food production in my household:

  • 2 compost bins
  • Split general waste and bins for compost from cooking waste
  • Buying “My Foodie Box” (a local company that provides food kits, similar to Hello Fresh) which is local and recycles their boxes and containers and delivers the correct amount of food

Ways to create less food waste in my household:

  • Visit The Source Bulk Foods more often, and purchase foods from them to avoid excess waste
  • Eat all leftovers and eat food before it goes off
