Recently, and for the past few years I have taken part in Lifesaving courses which have provided me with many skills and qualifications. I have achieved my Bronze Star, Medallion & Cross with the aim to further develop my level of judgement, technique and physical ability required to carry out water rescues.
Personally I believe having lifesaving knowledge is critical in daily life. You never know when a medical emergency occurs, and being able to spring into action could drastically affect the outcome of the emergency. Being able to identify when someone is having a stroke, heart attack or choking, for example, is the first step to taking the appropriate actions to save lives. A delay of just minutes could make a huge difference in quality of life for the victim.
In the time of taking these courses I have discovered it requires many skills & values, as well as knowledge to achieve the award. It required problem solving, for example when I had to rescue a group of people, each with different scenarios, I had to prioritize which people needed the most help to least help. Therefore everyone had a highest possible chance of surviving. It also required persistence, communication (to bystanders and the casualty) & remaining calm at all times.
These courses were really valuable and I find I can take the values and knowledge into everyday life.
