Project Utopia

Building Process, Week 7

Project Utopia- Project Utopia played a big part in the Year 7 curriculum in 2020, not only did this teach us about ways to help/design a perfect community/society, but we also applied capabilities learnt from other projects and lessons to this assignment. Project Utopia taught us about different cities and societies by linking them to the liveability factors, geographical concepts, global goals, sustainability features, and civics & citizenship which we learned throughout various subjects such as English, Hass, Science, and InnovatED.

UN Global Goals- Global Goals took a huge part in this project, the UN Global Goals are a series of goals and targets to help and improve major problems around the world right now. Global Goals have helped us by adding features such as the idea of “no gender” which links to gender equality. This means children from a young age are taught that there is no such thing as the gender to ensure everyone has equal opportunities in our utopian society. Therefore, using the UN Global Goals, we were able to create a society that helps with the earth’s current state.

UN Global Goals

Liveability- The main goal of this project was to teach parents and guests about liveability in a perfect society. Using the liveability factors (climate, safety and stability, healthcare and education, infrastructure, and environmental quality), we were able to help make our city more welcome. As we learnt in class, we need to have a strong constitution filled with reasonable rules and punishments to have a strong government, and having a stronger government means having a stable society. Therefore, using the liveability factors, we were able to improve our utopian society.

Collaboration- Working in a group for this project taught us to use the ASC capabilities, this includes collaboration, communication and organisation, I believe the strongest one in working with groups is collaboration, if we did not use our collaboration skills to create this enterprise then it simply wouldn’t be as successful. Collaboration means to use your social skills to ensure a successful outcome while working in a team. Using collaboration, we were able to achieve a plan of what our Utopian project would look like, a constitution for our society, a speech to explain our sustainable society, and a built model of our city. We used our collaboration skills to keep in contact before and after school to make sure everyone was on task and getting the job done by listing tasks on our Teams chat. Therefore, using collaboration, we can achieve better outcomes, while also building strong relationships with others.

Special Guests- Throughout this project, All Saints’ College has given us many opportunities to help us improve and create our project, this may include laser cutting and co-space online labs. However, I feel the most valuable opportunity was meeting important guests to give us feedback about this assignment. These people include Senator the Hon Mathias Cormann: Federal Finance Minister, Anthony Spagnolo: Liberal Candidate for Riverton, and more. One distinct interaction I remember is Anthony Spagnolo, he asked us questions about our community and town and gave us feedback on how the residents of our community will feel if we added different features, whereas Dr Kate Brooks asked us about our energy & sustainable systems and then gave us feedback on how we could improve our environmental quality. Using this opportunity to teach us about taking feedback from others, we were able to change parts of our project to fit the targeted audience.

Problems and Solutions- Creating a project like this has many ups and downs, many include hot glue gun problems and planning. One problem I remember clearly was time management as we only had a couple of weeks to create our model, write our speeches and create visual aids. Time management was a big struggle due to making sure everyone knew their roles then sticking to those roles. Although we did have a plan for each week, it was difficult to estimate time and get multiple tasks done within 2 hours. We also wrote on Microsoft Teams everyone’s homework tasks which helped time management at school in a large abundance. Using these solutions but making them more detailed will help the problems for many future projects.

Projects like this are exceptionally fun and educational. Although we had ups and downs, I feel this was a very great learning experience which will help with future projects which I am also looking forward to. Thank you All Saints College and Staff for this amazing opportunity, this wouldn’t have happened without you.
