Global Goals Project

The aim of this elective was to take one of the 17 global goals for sustainable development and create a project that positively impacted one of these goals.

Sustainable Development Goals launch in 2016

Thomas Haynes and I decided to do Goal 15 Life on Land. We brainstormed for a while about what to do, but ultimately decided on creating bat boxes to put up around our local community.

We contacted a local bat expert, Joe Tonga for a design and for some understanding on the behaviors of bats and the type of boxes they like. Joe gave us a design, and we were off!

The box below was the one that Joe gave us to replicate. We took it apart and started to work out what materials we needed.

To the left is our cut out pieces and one mock up box that we created, we had great success with this, and it went really well.

We then wood filled and painted our boxes, making them look all professional.

We got Joe in to put them up around campus, and gave 5 boxes to the council to put in some local parks.

Overall I was really happy with the outcome of this project, I feel as though we did a great job at replicating the design and we had an amazing time applying our woodworking skills to a project that can impact our community.
