Year 9 Camp Kalbarri

Leadership and Teamwork

Year 9 Camp was amazing, I was able to showcase my teamwork skills and leadership skills through activities including but not limited to assisting others in rock climbing and abseiling. Without these camp skills, the camp would be very hard, boring and impossible. There were several times where I had to demonstrate my leadership and teamwork skills, such as when moving campsites. We had to separate and spread out the food, cooking equipment and any equipment that is needed for the day, ensuring that everyone carried equal amounts of equipment. Teamwork was very important and essential for this part of camp because without it we might forget to bring some food or gear which would be catastrophic. Leadership was also essential because our camp group decided to have a leadership group for a day of the trip so everyday someone or some few people would be in control of everything and be a leader/role model for the group.

The group leaders would also have the most responsibility because they would have to know everything and remind everyone what to bring and keep asking if they have everything, so the instructors and students would not run out of water, food or equipment. When I was rock climbing I got to assist people and help motivated people to push forward. This is an important skill because without leadership and teamwork some people might not have made it up the cliff face. When I was abseiling, I helped some of my teammates when they were stuck so I encouraged them to keep going. Encouragement relates to being a team leader and it is about supporting your team, as well as shows that you believe in them. It is important that a leader is encouraging and supportive because without that the team wouldn’t have the passion or energy to overcome some challenges.

Four-Ways was a place were we had to hike 3km’s to get to. As a group we had to work together to make sure everyone was hydrated and comfortable to keep on walking since all of us was walking with an extra 30kg on our backs and hips. On the day we were hiking to Four-Ways I was the leader for the day and I had to make sure everyone was happy to keep going or stop and get some water, I also had a big responsibility to make sure we were walking in the right direction and the right path. I really enjoyed Year 9 camp to Kalahari because I got to present my teamwork and leadership skills.
