LOCK Camp at Honeymoon Pool

In Week 1 of Term 4, our Lock class went to Honeymoon Pool in Collie. Experiencing a bunch of activities such as rafting and the amazing race. This camp has helped me improve some capabilities over the 3 days.

A capability that has been used immensely over this camp was organisation. I tried to use this skill before camp when packing and buying things during the holidays, but I ended up procrastinating and began packing the day before camp. The morning of the camp I couldn’t find my board shorts and didn’t check over the packing list in case I forgot something. I learnt that to improve organisation skills, you have to improve your time management because I didn’t use my time wisely therefore not using organisation skills well. Another time during camp that I improved my organisation skills was before and after activities, getting ready, and making sure that I was on time with everything I needed to get on the bus and after before sleeping keeping the tent clean and our bags organised. Next time I should be using my organisation skills, I should make sure that I have a plan on when I’m going to pack or buy things because I know that I have poor time management skills and that should be worked on.

During the many activities we did on this camp, we worked in groups most of the time. My teamwork skills have greatly improved over this camp, especially when doing the amazing race. We were all split into random teams of 4-5 to do this activity. Facing lots of difficulties when doing the blindfolded challenges and needing lots of trust that leader could guide you safely. As well as the kayaking challenge; trying to fit 3 people onto a kayak and then using our legs and arms to get to the other side of the lake. The groups made it easier to talk to new people and develop communication skills, we then put all skills together to win the amazing race. I learnt that to improve your teamwork skills, you should use all the chances given to talk to other people, such as camp because you’re stuck going through all these hardships with each other. This capability has helped for future jobs or activities facing people I may not know or haven’t talked.

I believe that when doing the activity of rock climbing and abseiling, it helped to develop my leadership skills. Not because I was telling people what to do but by encouraging people that may have been scared to abseil down or were trying their best to climb. I learnt that the capability, leadership can come in many different forms and actions. Such as encouragement or the ability to share ideas and thoughts to everyone. The rock-climbing wall and abseil was a cool down from the amazing race and to help people by belaying or encouragement made the afternoon better. Next time I can involve myself more by projecting my ideas a bit better and helping others out.

To help keep clean the campgrounds we used some of the “Leave no Trace principles”. Plan ahead and prepare & dispose of waste properly are 2 large principles that I both used. By planning ahead I brought sustainable packaging that didn’t need to be disposed of. Not bringing any excess packaging and using hard plastic cups, bowls and utensils. The camp was really good as all of us as a group were constantly picking up our rubbish. In the future when I go camping with my family, I will keep it clean because it’s nice to arrive at a clean campsite. One other principle that I believed our whole Lock class did really well was ‘Be considerate of other visitors,’ in the night when we were doing our reflections together as a group. We made sure to be quiet and use red light so that we wouldn’t disrupt the visitors on the other campsite.
