Science – Engineering Challenge

Task Overview

In science, our assignment was to design, prototype and research in small groups a building structure that is able to withstand shaking that represents p and s waves, simulating an earthquake. For the building, there were some requirements like

  • minimum height of 60cm
  • base maximum 30X30cm
  • top minimum 5X5cm

We also had a budget of $60. The prices for our equipment were

  • 1X20cm strand of spaghetti = $1
  • 1g of blutack = $1

Engineering Process

Firstly, we allocated roles for each group member. Holly was the seeker and reporter and I was the project and equipment manager as they fitted our personalities.

Next, we underwent research on earthquake-proof buildings including Japan’s ones. We especially learnt that having diagonal lines in the structure can absorb the shaking energy and that buildings in real life use diagonal bearings. We also learnt that having a strong base is what gets buildings through. We spent a few lessons on this and we gathered inspiration for our building

Our first prototype was very strong and it lasted 10 seconds with ease. However the mass test was only able to hold 50 g. We decided to make a rectangular pyramid with multiple layers.

Our second prototype was similar but with more internal and external support and layers. We added a rectangular prism and a meeting point in the centre inside.

Changes to our Process

I think we could of spent more time on the stile, it was a bit rushed. We were very eager to create our building. Other than that, I think we worked efficiently and happily.

Teamwork and Collaboration

We set roles based on our strengths and personality

Holly – speaker and reporter, she was able to communicate with me and our teacher, ask any questions and help us finish everything by the deadline.

Me – project and equipment manager, i was able to keep us on track as well as managing the equipment that is needed and available to us.

These roles fit us perfectly because holly is very good at communicating and reassuring everything that needs or has to be done and I am good at leading, managing the task and keeping organised.

In conclusion, I loved this science project, I think is is creative and fun to do. It also teaches us how modern buildings have an earthquake proof structure able to withstand p and s waves.
