Road Safety Campaign

The topic I have chosen for my campaign is Distracted Driving, specifically the dangers of teenagers driving with friends. Distracted driving is an issue for teenagers as they are not very confident in driving yet and having their friends in the car distracting them can cause many accidents. Having distractions from phones is also a major issue as teenagers don’t know how dangerous it really is. My aim for this campaign is to discourage driving with large amounts of friends that will distract new drivers that can cause large crashes. My hope for this campaign is to reduce the amount of car crashes in teens caused by distracted driving. By showing teenagers the realistic statistics of how dangerous distracted driving is and how many teenagers die because they can’t focus on the road, it will show them the reality of it.

When you are learning to drive or are less confident with driving (P plates), make sure you’re paying full attention to the road which means if your friends can’t do that to help you then you shouldn’t drive with them in the car. It is a major risk to both your friends’ lives and your own. I pledge that I will not drive with my friends in a car if they refuse to keep us all safe by not distracting me. I also pledge that I will not use my phone while I’m driving, mostly because it is the law but now also because I’ve seen the true dangers of it.

2021 Engineering Project – Science

The year 9 Engineering Project in science, term 4 was designed to test core skills such as collaboration, teamwork, and problem solving. I worked on this project with Holly and Annabelle, and we developed skills such as organisation, planning, and designing throughout the course of this task.

The aim of this task was to design and test an earthquake-resistant structure from spaghetti strands and blue-tack. The structure had to be 60cm or taller in height and the base could not exceed 30x30cm. It had to withstand 10 seconds of a combination of S waves and P waves on an earthquake simulating board.

Unfortunately, our structure did not meet the success criteria, however the process behind our structure provided careful planning and a method to our madness.

The following PowerPoint describes the engineering process and design stages that went into our structure:

Teamwork & Leadership

Year 9 Camp Kalbarri

Packing the food for our week away from base

Leadership is said to be a learnt skill and Year 9 camp at Kalbarri taught me a lot. While getting food sorted for our third day out at the gorges, I was appointed leader with a couple of other students. This small taste of leadership while organising food for the day helped me to understand the role of a leader and how important effective communication is. Improving leadership skills also means improving organisation and to me, having an unorganised leader means unproductivity. I put this into action when divvying out the food for a fair distribution of weight as we had to carry our lunch down into Murchison Gorge. I found that it was really important to be able to work well with the other group leaders but at the same time, be able to direct the other students to avoid chaos and keep organisation.

Cooking on the first night at base

During the freezing nights at camp, cooking was a great way to collaborate with the other members in my group. I learnt a lot about teamwork and resilience during these nights because of the treacherous weather that left us soaked to the bone. The first night was the biggest challenge that I faced as there was a lot of new information to take in about the use of Trangia’s as well as the night that slowly crept in. Our roles in the cooking group rotated depending on the night so that one person didn’t always have the pressure of using the wok and everyone was content with their roles. I found that our communication skills reflected our compatibility as a group as without communication our team didn’t work effectively. As hard as it was to stay composed, I managed to work with our circumstances and complete the real challenge of camp.

In the future, these skills that I have learnt on camp will help me to communicate effectively both in a team and as a leader.

Injustices in the Australian legal system: John Button

https://portfolio.ascollege.wa.edu.au/ashleigh.smith/files/2021/03/John-Button-re-type.docx

In this project, we learnt about the principles of justice that uphold Australia’s legal system, such as the equal treatment before the law, right to silence, innocent until proven guilty, right to appeal, and impartial judge and jury. I studied the case of John Button and analysed how these principles were both upheld and violated in this case. After writing an essay on the topic, we were required to incorporate feedback and edit the essay so that it was fit for online publication. This essay is the end result of that editing process. It demonstrates my ability to take feedback, and to refine a piece of written work to produce a professional result.

Term 1 Statistics Project

https://www.beautiful.ai/player/-MWxpDtl2sNfQzAXvfRk/ASH-CAM-MATHS

This is the math project I worked on term 1, with Cameron, and produced the finished result of a slideshow presentation on a presentation software called Beautiful.ai. We studied statistics, and had to learn how to process, deal with, and draw information out of them. Specifically, we studied the 2 questions. Our categorical question: Is there a product you think the canteen should start selling? If so, what? Our numerical question: How much do you typically spend on lunch at the canteen? Here is a link to our presentation. (Note, this software, Beautiful.ai, requires you to use the arrow keys to switch between slides.)

My reflection on COVID-19

2020 has been one roller coaster of a year and we aren’t even halfway yet! Who could have predicted that a global pandemic could have changed the world so much in such a small space of time.

Although dealing with Corona has been challenging for all of us it has provided me a chance to reflect on what truly matters to me.

Personally I learnt that spending time with my family is very important to me and I really got to know my family. Although schooling online was hard specifically focusing on my work, I noticed that my stress levels were down and I became a lot happier. I learnt that  focusing on my well being was very important and staying at home allowed me to do that.

In terms of my family, I learnt that we all were less stressed and grumpy which provided a comfortable space. Although two members of my family were basically going insane, we were a lot happier together. Some of us had a shorter fuse with constantly being with each other but we all came out well.

In terms of the community, I learnt that the Corona virus had some very positive effects on the environment and the people. Animals have begun to return to cities and carbon emissions are down as well as air pollution which astonishing. To see Venice have clear waters is amazing!

Online Behaviours

If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all. You might have heard this saying a lot. Maybe you heard it from your parents when you were being mean to your siblings. But did you know that this saying applies to online behaviours as well? Being online doesn’t mean that you can say things that you wouldn’t say in person. In fact it means that you should be even more careful about your words. Wording things with care means that you can’t hurt people accidentally. By carelessly throwing words into a sentence, you can really hurt someones feelings and damage a relationship.

By being a bystander, you are basically being the bully yourself. By watching someone being bullied, you are agreeing with what they are doing even if you would never actually do it. Cyber bullying is another version of this. If you are watching a chain of comments that are nasty, and you don’t try and stop them, you can be counted as one of the bullies. You need to show courage when standing up for people but also showing respect. If you are standing up for someone but also being rude to the original bully, you can make them feel horrible about themselves. This can also start a chain of comments on that person telling them how horrible they are for saying that. I general, there is no need to be mean to anyone, no matter what they have done.

Social Media can have a lot of negative influences on people. People act very differently online than they do in a real conversation. When this happens, you have to understand their side of the story. This is using empathy, which is very important in these cases. Empathy is a very important skill to have because when someone is having negative emotions, you need to understand how to help them. Empathy is one of the key messages that I have taken from this unit. I know after studying this unit that I can use empathy online by putting myself in their position. I can ask myself , how would I feel if this happened to me? This question is important to understand because by putting yourself in their shoes, you can make a difference in their lives.

Being responsible online doesn’t just come from making smart choices. It means that you also influence others to do the same. By influencing someone else to make a smart decision, you can really help them and possibly put them out of danger. It is important to know your rights and responsibilities. It is also important to know what things you should keep private. If you spread your private information with strangers, you can really get yourself into trouble.

By wording things in the wrong way you can actually really hurt someone, even if you don’t mean to. People take things in different ways. This means that by putting words into a sentence without thinking them through, people can misinterpret your words. Sarcasm online is very careless because it is your tone of voice that makes sarcasm stand out. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.  This is very important to keep in mind to remind you to be kind online and in person.

Even though I have never said anything rude or mean online, I now think these things through even more to see if there is a way that someone can find something offensive. Before this unit I used Instagram as my main online platform. I now realise that people can use every online platform to make people feel bad. I plan to make sure that what I say is nice to all and I plan to help people more often with bullying and become more of an upstander. From my learning throughout this unit I have become more aware of the importance of responsibility online. I wish to see changes in how social media sites work by being able to block unfriendly messages. This could help a lot of kids from cyber-bullying and help them to have a happier lifestyle.

Visual Art Project

In Project X I chose to do Visual Arts. Visual Art is a great way to bring out your creative side and have time to be free and create whatever you like. This term we will be doing pour art which is a style of art where you can create marble effects and ripples and cells by using paint. It might look simple but in reality it is really hard! I am very excited to get started on pour art because I love to create and let my creativity flow over a canvas, which is exactly what we are doing in art! This style of art takes a lot of practice and will also be displayed around the school.

My Achievements

In my past years I have been involved in multiple service opportunities. One of my most recent ones was doing an artwork and selling it to raise money for Nulsen. The project was to create an artwork using recycled materials. I have also received a few awards including the All Saints’ medal and the Riley trophy for showing service and faith.  At the 2019 swimming carnival I received runner-up for year 7 girls Durack. I am also involved with multiple sports and co-curricular such as Inter-house sport and cheer leading. I have received many awards inside of cheer and my team and I recently won a bid to America. My cheer team is very successful and are the highest team in our division. I have also been involved with two different ICAS tests this year, English ICAS and Science ICAS.
