I was in the 2020 “Live The Journey” dance concert. This year was very different to the other dance concerts as the show was shortened and we only performed one night. This was due to COVID-19 and in the beginning, we weren’t even sure if there was going to be a concert. I was in 3 dances: Hip hop lead by old saint Drew, Sweet dreams advanced Jazz, and a contemporary piece lead by an out of school choreographer Scott Elsterman, called Over Grown. I Learned so much from this fun experience and I hope to further improve my technique.

Having a professional choreographer Scott Elstermanteach us a dance was not only a wonderful experience but also an opportunity to learn. Scott taught me how to feel the music and how to work with others to create a unique dance that everyone has contributed to. It was not about being to most flexible or coolest tricks it was how well we worked as a team, small movements but when everyone does it together it became a masterpiece.
As I participated in different styles it helped to develop my skills even further. In Over Grown, we helped to choreograph the dance meaning I had to learn to change my ideas and apply things quickly to the surroundings. I learnt to hear other ideas and not to just pick one idea but to merge all the ideas and make it even better. We continuously strived to make the dance the best we could produce. Together we work hard and learnt that if we all try hard and help others who are struggling we can make a wonderful dance where we all feel confident. From this experience, I learn discipline and dedication and teamwork, all very valuable skills in which I hope to continue to develop.
During the performance of the dances, everyone was stressed and panicking. Some people had dance right after the other dance and therefore had to do a costume change in the wings. This involved us working together to help the other dances get ready in time. I also helped many of my friends get to their dances on time and through costume changes. This was just the craziness from the backstage area never mind the actual performance. Stepping into those wings in pitch-black darkness trying to not run into anyone is a feeling I can’t explain. You get on the stage as the adrenaline starts rushing, The bright lights blind you as the music starts playing, you look over to your friends for reassurance and then you know you can do it. Performing on stage is one of the best feelings and from the audience looks flawless and effortless but in fact, it actually takes a lot of concentration and coordination with your team. Everyone in your team must know where they are going at all times or you will run into each other.
I will continue to join the dance concert and the dance community here at the college until I graduate. I believe the ability to work with a large group and produce an art piece is incredibly valuable. The experience I have gained and friends I have made throughout the dance concert are unforgettable.
