Science Engineer Project

Our project

Our outline was to create an earthquake proof building in teams of 4 or 5. The materials we could use were spaghetti sticks and blue tack. We had a $60 budget and one stick of spaghetti would cost $1 and a gram of blue tack would cost $1. An earthquake is a sudden violent shaking of the ground which typically causes mass destruction. So we had to consider how we would make a tough sturdy structure which can survive an earthquakes waves. This was simulated by an earthquake table which shook up and down and the structure had to not break down during that time period. The reason we are doing this because in the real world many people die to earthquakes and buildings collapsing in on people so having strong buildings which can withstand magnitudes can help less human deaths and buildings falling during these times.

Civil engineers need to build these earthquake proof buildings and we are practising these skills. We had to do a design sprint which was making a building with no prior research. Then we were able to reflect on our design sprint and make changes necessary which made our building stronger safer and within budget. I would say give us more money which would be helpful to create a more structurally stronger building. If we were able to have another testing run this might give us more of an insight on how to change it even better for our very final run.

This was our idea before we made it
This is what our final design looked like
