For Innovate ED, Jamie and I are working on a smaller model of a wind turbine that will generate electricity. We are in Dr Jim’s group, looking at sustainable energy sources. We are using a bar magnet as the generator, and have a wire ‘frame’. The magnet will spin inside that wire frame, using the magnetic field to produce electricity. We are aiming to light a little bulb, which will be in the circuit.
So far, we have created the wire frame and found a magnet which we will use temporarily. (it’s not a bar magnet) We have created a box to cover the frame and magnet. Our actual turbine is going to be vertical, and 3D-printed. An upholstery needle will be used to spin the magnet. Next week, we are aiming to get the circuit running, and hopefully the turbine 3D-printed.
