Teamwork and Leadership in Year 9 Kalbarri Camp

My teamwork and leadership skills developed significantly on our Year 9 camp at Kalbarri. Many situations needed us to work together as a team, and leadership was needed to achieve our goals.

Teamwork is the ability to work with others, and a skill that was used throughout the camp. On camp, we cooked dinner in our tent groups each night, and we shared the workload. If we had not helped each other, cooking would have taken much longer, and dinnertime would have been very late. I discussed with my group how we would split the process and we found a way to do it. Not only did I focus on what I was preparing, but I also helped my teammates. As a result of our teamwork, we were able to enjoy our dinners every night. There were many similar activities to this, such as setting up our tent together. Without teamwork, our camp would not have been as successful.

I also showed leadership on camp. During this camp, the weather and living conditions were harsh, and we faced many challenges. I tried my best to encourage and support others. When some cried, I gave them encouragement. During our hikes, I helped people down steep rocks, and when people felt exhausted, I encouraged them to keep going. When we were abseiling, I volunteered to go first because everyone felt anxious. I also felt nervous, but I did it. This encouraged the people abseiling after me. I did all I could to make sure that everyone was enjoying their experience at camp. There were many other situations similar to these, and I started to become more proactive.

Many disliked this camp due to the bad weather. However personally, I feel that during these harsh conditions and challenges, teamwork and leadership were needed more than usual, which really improved my teamwork and leadership skills. This was a significant reward for me.
