My Lock experience

Kayaking

For this unit we went to Shelly Foreshore every Wednesday to kayak. We had to use a skirt which was new to me as I have a canoe and its a new feeling for me. For one of the first lessons we had to practise flipping and pulling the skirt to let ourselves up. I was nervous going into this activity however I did it and i was happy after completing it. We also did an activity where we had to send off the jetty which was also scary however I did it and was happy that I did. We learned many skills such as emergency stopping. In kayaking self awarness was key. We all had to stick together however lots of people got frustrated when you bumped into them so knowing your surroundings to keep everyone calm was important.

Rock climbing

In this secton we learned how to climb and fit the ropes so no one would die and also how to tie ropes. I have already had a little experience with rock climbing but this was the first time that I have actually consistently climbed and i feel that as the weeks progressed I got higher and higher. I have never known how to tie a knot until this and i found it helpful as it’s tought me lots of safer ways to tie knots. Also I probably wont use this in the future but I now know how to tie ropes for a rock climbing wall so people are safe in their harness and if they fall they get caught. The rope tying aspect of the section might not of been the most interesting but it was the most helpful. For this topic effective communication was required as if there weren’t people helping tell you where your hands and feet should go you might of been able to reach as high as you might. Also before the climbing even happened you would need to check in with the climber and the belayer so both are prepared.

Bush Cooking

For this topic we had to cook in the bush. For our Dwellingup excursion my group made bacon and egg burgers. This was a complete success as everyone brought the food we required and it ran smoothly. I was in charge of the cooking and other members of my group were collecting and building the fire and preparing the food. I found that this experience has taught me lots as I never believed in my ability to cook however I made the food well. Throughout the weeks we have started bush cooking at school each wednesday last week we had to make italian food. However one of my group members forgot the pasta and the meat. So I had to problem solve by asking around to other groups if they had spare food and luckily enough we were able to use some spare pasta and we still could cook some pasta for our meal. During this time I had to show some leadership as some members of my group had given up because of the absense of pasta and I prepared the pasta fill up the pot with water and kept the fire running.

Leave No Trace

Whilst cooking in the bush when there was spare food left over you were required to dig a hole quite far underground. This is because if animals were to eat some of the human food it may distrupt their normal diet. The reason this hole had to be deep was so animals couldn’t smell the leftover food and start digging for it. For the sustainability section of this topic we tried to reuduce the amount of litter and plastics left on the ground as it can hurt the environment.
