Innovate Ed Goal 7

In Innotate Ed, Term 3 2019. Kerry Cao and I attempted to make a mini model of a sustainable energy source. We chose to make a wind turbine, and power it with a homemade dynamo, a coil of wire with a magnet spinning in the center. We created a prototype, but soon realised that a dynamo wouldn’t work, as you need to spin the dynamo at really high speeds to generate electricity, after this disaster, we opted to use a pre made hobby motor, which seemed to work well when being spun by hand.

I quickly realized that we could use my 3D printer to create the wind catcher for the vertical turbine, this printed in two parts, each taking over 24hrs each to print. These ended up being too heavy to spin with the wind. So we created blades from laminated paper.

We asked Dr Jim to laser cut a housing for our electronics, we attached the turbine to the motor, and glued everything in place. Kerry and I realised that it would need a lot of wind power to turn the motor.

What we learned:

-Keep persisting, because eventually you will succeed

– Think ideas through before creating them

-Make multiple prototypes

– Be persistent

We used the following strengths:

-Teamwork

-Creativity

-Problem Solving
