$20 Boss

At the start of term 4, I decided to undertake the challenge of $20 boss. When starting out I was on my own, but decided to branch out and collaborate with people in other groups to make a successful business with my friends, because I wanted to have fun and make money at the same time. Our business has been very successful and we have created a product that sells at the college markets.

We used the design thinking process when designing our product to make sure that our product was different from others, making sure that it stands out from the crowd. When creating our product we decided to learn from others and learned from other students on how to screen-print and make our tea towels.

I developed leadership throughout this course by taking action on specific tasks that needed doing and delegating so that work could be completed. At the start of this task I was cautious with taking too much of a leadership role, because I was working as a team with my friends. Once we got stuck into creating our business though, I decided to take action as I felt that work was not as efficient as it could be. At the start our progress was slow, and our products were of low quality but as we progressed our products have increased in production speed and the overall look and feel of the products have improved tenfold.

In this InnovatED task I foun

d that I would get distracted easily, and that after a while the novelty wore off and screen printing became boring. To combat this, I asked one of my team members to stay in the room with me when I was doing the printing, and for them to get on with the other work that needed doing. By doing this, I much more enjoyed the screen printing as it gave me a chance to catch up with my friends about what was going on with their lives. I found myself listening more to what they had to say, and because I had the time to do this while printing it wasn’t taking away from my job or quality of the prints.

Overall I have really enjoyed this project, as it has challenged my thinking skills and empowered me to make difficult decisions. I would definitely recommend this project to anyone looking for introductions to learning business skills or if you just want to earn a little bit of money while attending school. This project was run extremely well by the teachers, as we were able to ask for advice or assistance when necessary.
