Brutalist Sculptures

In Year 8 art I learnt about brutalist sculptures. Brutalist art may look very dull and boring but I think that it is beautiful in their own way. It is very It has a very geometric, dystopian ruins feel to it. We actually have some brutalist buildings around Perth like the Perth Concert Hall and the Public Transport Centre.

Lego Sculptures

So I was tasked with creating a brutalist sculpture. The material of choice : Lego.

I first created 3 designs out of Lego and then picked the one I wanted to create for my final work. This stage allowed me to be creative and experiment with my ideas.

None of the designs pictured were actually made. I had to simplify the second design for the next and most difficult phase, making the outer walls of my mold. To do this I had to measure my chosen lego prototype and then had to cut the sides out of a foam core board. I found this tricky as we had to use a stanley knife and I hadn’t used one before. I also found it hard to cut straight lines but after a bit of practise I got the hang of it. I cut the sides out and stuck these to a sturdy board with my lego. I used huge amounts of hot glue so that there were no leaks. I then used pinkysil a silicone mix to create the mold for my final sculpture. It looked like this when it was set.

This is how the mold came out. It wasn’t the prettiest as the sides weren’t done correctly but it still works as a mold.

Making my brutalist building real

It was the moment I had been waiting for all term. It was time to pour the concrete. This envolved mixing water into the concrete powder as any other order would result in a lumpy consistency. Then you had to mix it quickly and then pour it into the mold. The

Below are pictures of my final sculpture.

My Final Thoughts

What I learnt from this project was lots of practical skills like cutting with a stanley knife, pinkysil mold making and pouring concrete. I also learned a lot about brutalist buildings and that there are some that are closer to home than expected. I also feel like on their own the sculptures are cool but all together they look like dystopian city in ruins. This was perhaps my favourite part of the project, seeing all the sculptures come together.
