Precious Plastics – Year 8 Innovated S1

In Innovated this year we got to chose our courses. I chose precious plastics. When I was in Yr 5 the school was only just discovering what these machines were and were checking if they were safe to use in a school environment. They ended up being aproved about six months later were being added to sustainability club. Now as and older and more responsible year 8 student I finally got to use these machines.

I learnt that sorting plastic is very important because if one type of plastic is contaminated with another type of plastic and this is both cooked together in the same mold then the product wouldn’t work out and then that would be plastic waste which is the exact opposite of we would be trying to do. This taught me to be self aware. If I put one bottle cap in the wrong container then I would be undoing everyone else’s hard work and would be wrecking the product we would eventually make. Also on

The precious plastics program also allowed us to be creative. A blank clipboard mold was like a blank canvas. Felicity and I’s favourite activity was to pack molds with lots of different colourful designs.

I have really enjoyed this experience as it taught me how to look at plastic in a different way and I enjoyed the hands on activity to improve the sustainability of our world.
